A day @ the Hospital

I have needed some time to recover and gather my thoughts after having spent a day at the Hospital in Keflavík. The story is that Daði Jónsson 4th year is working as an assitant doctor there and we had made a deal that I would come visit him in the hospital.

His prerequisite was that he would get some time to settle in his new job, which was no problem of course. Then time came last thursday !!!

I could even feel it the night before, the butterflies twirling around in my stomach, like I was going to make some life or death decision or something. That was not the case, but I had been working on my homework assigned by the young enthusiastic doctor. Homework: read about clinical skills on the heart and lungs and know the basic procedures/diseases. So I already had some responsibility and was not going to be shadow but also share some of the spotlight.

I get there at 8 o´clock in the morning, first thing is to find a coat for me. It was a strange experience, cause I know the look the hungarians give me when I walk around campus in my lab coat. But now the looks were going to becomming from icelandic patients, who might actually recognize or know me, since I am from this town. Made the whole situation more serious.

Everything went great ! there was even a sudden burst action as 3 patients were admitted early afternoon. I ended up pinching myself as I quicky paced into one of the rooms with a morphine injection to be given i.v. into a cancer patient with serious abdominal/chest pains. Then another moment is when I was calling the research dept. and ordering some more values. Taking a blood sample and in the end taking a patients history because there was so much too do that I was the next to best thing.

All this under the supervision of Daði Jónsson, my attrusted colleague and friend.

DJ thanks for a great, monumental, career experience.

I will be back soon, or next time I have a day off.

Sunday

Movie Star

This just in: Róbert Mar will be presented in the new Hollywood hit film "Flags of our Fathers" produced by Clint Eastwood and Steven Spielberg.

The call was just made, so here is what the plan with holds. Wednesday a dress fitting, an old school army uniform from WWII, then 3 days of shooting in mid august.

róbert´s note on this is quote "I better be seen dead or alive, I just want to see myself on the bigscreen" and to be added "well if I don´t make it big on this film I always have the M.D. to fall back on"

Wednesday

"I´ll be back"

this is what I have been saying for many years to my beloved friends located on the west side of the Atlantic. Due to recent events in my everlasting case against Franklin County/NCIC/INS and many others fine establishments. I seem to have made enough progress to be hopeful to appear in the US of A in a months time.

This is all a dream as far as I am concerned, I have learned not to get my hopes too high, but a realistic chance to be able to return.

So for those who still care after being left out in the cold for who knows how many years, pencil me in for August.

I intend to be in Virgina Beach arond the middle of august.

I wont be able to confirm this until just a few days before this will happen so don´t be asking me to make exact plans before hand.

Cats and Dogs

and NO I am not talking about the rain here in Iceland, even though its really starting to take its toll on everyone.

my story today is that I met a special person last nite, she was the cab driver that took me on the night shift. It is really a luxury to ride in a cab to work everyday. Once I enter the car I have the choice of sparking an easy chat or just to sit there and read or think the 20 mins to work.

Last nite I was in the chatting mood, the cab driver was new or just filling in for someone. I start off with some neutral chat and she soon pick up on philosophical issues. I could see and even feel immediately that this woman was not like most other, she had an outstanding presence about her.

One idea that I would like to introduce is the following; on the issue of family and marriage in iceland, she quickly concluded that Men were like dogs and Women like cats. The backup to this is that about 100 years ago icelanders crawled out of their grass roof homes and started to seek a new enviroment. this adaptation exceeded most limits and people became crazed for cleanliness and hence the removal of animal as they were connected to filth. Old times were crowded small houses where the smell of the nearby animal was definetly not unnoticed.

To continue, she stated that the animals were moving back into the homes in the dog and cat like personas. The main point being is that many things are to be learned from these characters. The Dog an honest simple being, readily readable and always turning back to its owner versus the Cat which walks around as it pleases requesting attention when desired, walking away when displeased and behaving self-dependent.

Just imagine the fight to please the cat when you never really know what it´s intentions are, playing a hold me - release me game.

At the exact moment I was pondering these new ideas in my head I thought "damn I hate cats" and once the cards were all played out I had to ask myself "does that mean I hate women"...

the answer is of course NO, but reinstates that there is a lot to be learned from our furry little friends.

In conclusion this anonymous cab driver bound some shadow of hope that these little friends of ours would be hope to better realtionships between men and women.

Golfing with a Fox

yeah, you read it right I went golfing with the fox on my home turf. We had a nice round of 18 at Hólmsvöllur, Leiruni.

it was great to team up with a debrecen colleague for a round of golf. I even allowed myself to dream for one moment "what if there was a golf course in debrecen?" umhh... one of those sweet day dreams.

which brings me to one funny story about myself a couple of years back. I had taken a life determining decision to start medical school in a far away unknown country, Hungary. As I start packing my belongings I had to choose carefully as the maximum luggage allowed was 20kg, bastard airline companies charging overweigth at the slightest opportunity. I find myself standing at the airport with 10kg worth of shorts and tanktops and the other half is a handful of metal rods packed in a golfsett.

Definetly shot myslef in the foot there, what an idiot.

brought those same golf clubs home with me on the next trip...

Second thoughts

Im starting to have second thoughts about this movie extra. Once I realized that I was not really likely to get a reasonable part or be seen in the movie, then what the hell is the point of all this. Cause there is no way that Im going to lie dead in Sandvík for Kr.5000 per 12 hour day !!!

Hell Im not seriously ready for being wet and muddy, cause the weather here is straight up shit ! Baszmeg, hugging the ground playing a dead guy for some petty cash. I think this cat is cut out for better things than that :)

plus I found out from an actor friend of mine that he had been auditioning for an acutal part with lines, which at the same time basically eliminate all my eligibility for a "one liner"

Wednesday

"Flags of Our Fathers"

New mission ahead, there will be no live update from my golf tournament. situation is that i didn´t enter the masters cause there were no tee times in the morning and I was working evening shifts so no golf. kinda sucks but I was quickly able to say fcuk it !!!

the new plan on the other hand is that im going to Reykjavík today to Eskimo models to be pictured and measured for the upcomming film "The Flags of our Fathers" which is directed by Clint Eastwood. This is some kind of war movie that will partly be filmed in my back yard or more accurately 10 mins away. They had advertised for extras and I finally called yesterday to find out the details.

the quick scoop is that if you are called in for a part then the beginning salary for a day is 5000 ISK or about $80. So I figured hell if given the chance to be an extra this is one hell of an oppertunity and much better than the nursing home Im working at now.

Plus if I were to be selected for any bigger part my salary would increase accordingly.

"Meistara Mót" or Masaters Championship

My next golf tournament after the Midnite Sun disaster is going to be the Masters at my local golf club. The setup of this tour is really nice and really provides a clear cut winner. Players are set up in groups according to handicap, play four round of golf in 5 days and the one with the lowest amount of strokes wins.

I was thinking about not skipping this again this year but after a short talk with one of my fellow club mates I decided to put in some practice time and give it a shot. Because quite frankly I was going to quit golf a couple days ago after some horred playing once again. It just takes the fun out of it spending most of your time looking for the ball and playing bad shots over and over again.

enough about golf...

I´m finally getting a haircut today, looking really shabby. I just missed my hair stylist or right after I came home he went away. Gummi at Mojo is going to hook it up real good today.

I will be sure to throw in a before and after pic....
